Gamble's Newsletter #133 - Family Christmas Vacation

Dec 15 - 31, 2008
Picture of the Week

This week we went on our family holiday. The day after school let out, we were off to Jinja and then to Sipi Falls. One of the songs we sang along the way was "A Christmas to Remember." We wanted to share with you a few of the things we want to remember from this Christmas season.

  • Chad got pulled over by a policeman "looking for his Christmas," aka a bribe.
  • We visited Miriam and Moses' biological grandpa (and aunt and Uncle Moses and Uncle Hubert).
  • Moses can now swim without any help for short distances.
  • Shanthi's mom sent us off with 6 dozen cookies, which we promptly consumed in 2 days.
  • Shanthi got what felt like whiplash while chicken fighting in the swimming pool. It was Miriam on Chad's shoulders and Moses on Shanthi's.
  • Opening up the door of the room we stayed in to see a striking 60 m waterfall.
  • Seeing thousands of stars twinkling brightly in the dark night sky (we were miles from any large city and there was zero ambient light, it was amazing!).
  • Our children arguing in the back seat of the vehicle over who was going to play which imaginary musical instrument. Of course you can’t have TWO air pianos! They were rocking out to Five Iron Frenzy’s song Superpowers.
  • We bought 12 large fresh mangoes for a dollar from a roadside vendor.
  • We made our own 12 days of Christmas while on our 4 hour trip back from Sipi Falls. Can you guess which family member created which lyric? We had 1 dress with a pear tree, 2 flowers, 3 thousand dollars, 4 headlamps, 5 diamond earrings, 6 cruise trips to Alaska, 7 slug bugs, 8 children's, 9 sodas, 10 works of fiction, 11 cell phones, and 12 days of rest.
  • Chad got pulled over a second time by a policeman for scaring people by driving with his headlights on during the day time. He had them on during the daylight for safety since the roads in Africa are the most dangerous place to be. Who would have thought he’d be scaring people.
  • Chad got pulled over a third time because “those lights aren’t for decoration” (re: the red stop light that Chad drove through after the vehicles in front of him did the same thing). The policeman wanted 2 crates of soda for Christmas.
