1.  During our many summer travels we saw this halarious sign, so Shanthi decided to do what it said!
2.  We were so grateful for time with our kids!  Camping in the Rockies with our son and his amazing bride was so spectacular!
3.  The girls planned a 5km run for Chad - the course was over the Narrows Bridge in Tacoma.  For all those engineers, he was sure to check the wind before starting!  Starbucks giftcard to whoever responds with why this is so important.
4.  Within 2 weeks of returning to Malaysia Chad was asked to help on a design project in Cambodia.  He made a short trip and during some free time got to meet with one of the first interns in the office.  He is now working in the Ministry of Public Works.
5.  Our final driving stats for the summer - the timer reset after 100 hours, so add a 1 in front of the 96 hours.  Good thing we love our car!!
6.  So grateful to be able to attend (and officiate) the wedding of Chad's cousin in Michigan.

Another Transition

Since our last update, where we celebrated the end of Shanthi's school year and the beginning of a new chapter, our summer has been a whirlwind of travel, family, and preparation for an exciting new season! We are growing weary with all of our transitions, but this is one that doesn't involve an international move!  We also hope that our season of transition is coming to an end so that we can be settled for a while.

Oasis...
Our time in the USA was incredibly special because we were able to reconnect with our children, extended family and dear friends. The last couple of years have been full of "goodbyes" as we've left to serve in other places, so being with familiar faces in a familiar place, even for a short time, was a gift.

Our travels began with training in Memphis hosted by Oasis. This is the organization that Shanthi has worked for since we arrived in Malaysia and we are thrilled to join them on a full time basis.  Oasis is the USA based sending organization for her school in Malaysia and is a registered non-profit organization in the USA.  With Chad stepping away from EMI, Oasis will be our new mobilziing organization. It was a wonderful opportunity to be equipped and prepared for our next chapter, and to see firsthand how God is working through their team.

Ibex...

As we shared in our last newsletter, Chad's role with EMI is coming to an end.  He officially departs EMI on August 31st. This is a bittersweet parting and not something we saw when we started this year.  However, we are so excited to now share what's next...

Chad will be joining Ibex, an organization that supports entrepreneurs using their businesses for ministry in challenging environments. This is a direct continuation as well as an expansion of the work he has been doing with EMI's business offices.  Chad will go from working with 3 design businesses in India, Cambodia and Egypt to working with over 30 different types of businesses throughout Asia and the Middle East.  He is thrilled to be able to build on the experience he has gained while also nervous about starting with a new organization. We're excited to see how God will use Chad in this new capacity to empower and encourage business professionals in ministry. You can find out more about Ibex here: https://ibexcommunity.com

Finances & Questions...

After the incredibly busy summer of travel (click here to see our route and some more pictures), we returned to Malaysia just in time for Shanthi to start the new school year.  It feels so good to be back in Malaysia, we are grateful for a sense of physical permanence here.

Shanthi's Scholarly Snippets

Did you know...?

The average circumference of the 5 trees in front of our school is 90 cm?  This was the first environmental science lab I did with the students.  Tree huggers unite!

I have 9 students that are in both my Alg. 2 class and my environmental science class.  This past week I got asked by one of these students, "Mrs. Gamble, where do I sit in THIS class?" The other question I got asked was "Mrs. Gamble, is this science class or math class?" Technically we were doing math in science class, so it's easy to be confused!

Also, my environmental science students found an agressive red ant during the tree hugging lab just before lunch time that they have named Alberto and I allowed them to keep it as a class pet. They made a waterpark and slide for Alberto - so thoughtful.  But by the end of school, Alberto had made his escape and is trying to be reunited with his colony.  This is going to be a fun and interesting class!
From Chad's Bookshelf

Chad loves reading and always has a few books in progress.  Here is a quote from his recent reading

  • When we define ourselves by our work, by our dedication and effectiveness and willingness to go the extra mile, then it's easy to see rest as the negation of all those things. If your work is yourself, when you cease to work, you cease to exist... Rest is not work's adversary. Rest is work's partner. They complement and complete each other.
