Long term impact The Prodigal returns We had a wonderful intern stay with us in Cambodia in 2019. He recently called, very excitedly, to share a recent experience. While talking with a depressed young college student from South East Asia he remembered his cultural training upon arriving in Cambodia. During this training he was told of the importance of an "Honor/Shame" culture, like Cambodia and much of South East Asia. In this culture, your acts bring either shame or honor upon your parents, extended family and even the local village. If you are feeling that shame, there can be very little hope of a quick turnaround and the world can get very dark, very quickly. This particular young lady felt like she had so much shame that she couldn't face her family any longer. She didn't know what to do. In the training, this intern learned how Jesus taught about the honor that was bestowed upon the prodigal son in Luke 15. You can read more about this story and how it relates to honor shame cultures here. This former intern used his training to share how God removes our shame and can give us a place of honor with Him and restore us to our family. The young lady broke down in tears and received hope in that moment! If it wasn't for his internship in Cambodia and the training that he received, he said that he would have had no idea how to respond to this young lady. Thank you for partnering with us so that the world may know about Jesus. You're going where?! Speaking of long term impact, Chad's headed to Turkey and Northern Iraq (that "Northern" part is supposed to make you feel safer) in August to meet with people to see where EMI might want to open its next office in Chad's region. There is already a couple who intend to lead the office, so we won't be doing that. But we may end up visiting the office in a couple years as it starts up. Save the Date We'd love to catch up with you before we head to India. If you live in the Roseville area, we have an in person event. If you live too far, we'll have a zoom event. If you RSVP, we'll make sure to send you the details as we get closer. RSVP for the in person: August 23rd we'll be having dinner at 6 - 8 pm. RSVP for Zoom: August 24th, 6-7 pm Pacific Time |
