1.  Water flowing into a storage tank in the village

2.  EMI staff member describing well construction to members of the community

3.  Abandoned parts of a shallow well.  These wells failed to provide reliable water throughout the year and were being replaced by a community distribution system designed by the EMI Office.

4. Our local transportation!  This is how we get around town as well as travel the country!  So grateful for our Honda FTR 223 motorcycle!  Starbucks gift card to the one who can guess how many motorcycles the Gamble family has owned.

5. For Chad's birthday, a group of friends came together for a 1 day Eco-Challenge of biking, kayaking, hiking and eating! Starbucks gift card for the one who correctly guesses Chad's current age (don't worry, it is highly regarded to be considered old in Cambodia)

Water is Flowing

For the past year, Chad has been advising on a water distribution system in rural Cambodia.  The challenges facing the community are huge and the typical solutions have not been working.  Lack of reliable ground water has meant that the typical shallow wells go dry for parts of the year.  The lack of water has contributed to mass emigration from this part of the country to neighboring Thailand.  Many who migrate do so without proper paperwork, entering the neighboring countries as illegal immigrants.  This leads them to be easily exploited and trafficked.  To address the root of the problem, a community water system was designed by the EMI office and is now being constructed!  Late last month Chad was able to visit the project in order to see and learn from the construction efforts.  It was so encouraging to hear the testimony of the people receiving the water as well as hear from the construction team on how the work has been going. It was awesome to see water flowing through new pipes throughout the community!

Thank you so much for your prayers and support as we enable water to flow and communities to be transformed!  If you would like more details about this project, or others that EMI is working on, click on the EMI Project Portfolio page: https://emiworld.org/portfolio/101383

COVID Strikes Cambodia

We have been so blessed to live in Cambodia during this pandemic.  Over the entire year, Cambodia had reported very few cases (typically less than 5 per day) and no deaths.  Community transmission was limited to three small outbreaks of less than 100 cases that were quickly contained.  Unfortunately, that has ended, and we are now in the midst of Cambodia's largest COVID outbreak with over 600 people currently diagnosed with COVID.  On Thursday, there was the first reported COVID related death.  There is a growing sense of fear among the population as the cases continue to mount throughout the country.  Additional measures have been enacted at Shanthi's school and she is now teaching from home for the first time.  Chad's office has also put in place stricter measures of temperature checks, limiting in person meetings and much more mask wearing while in the office.  We are still very fortunate to be in Cambodia, these numbers pale in comparison to what is happening throughout many other places in the world.  Fear is still quite real though and the country is slowing locking down.

  • Pray that God's peace would enter the hearts and minds of those worrying about COVID and those making critical decisions related to COVID.

  • The crisis in Myanmar happened just after we sent out our last newsletter - about Myanmar.  Please pray for that country and the project that continues to move forward.

  • We are working out the details of our upcoming home assignment.  Please pray for wisdom in how we spend our time.

  • Chesna is looking for a summer internship as a part of her Kinesiology degree.  Please pray that God would provide her with a great fit!

Previous Requests:
  • Some students at Shanthi's school are really struggling with various issues.  Please pray that they would receive God's comfort and peace.  - With students and teachers being remote, it has been hard to stay connected to the students.
  • There are many logistical challenges with us returning to the USA next year.  Please pray that God would provide for all our needs - housing, a vehicle, extra finances, etc! - Please continue to pray for this need.  Our return tickets were just changed and we are still looking for housing and a vehicle!
  • Prayer for the motorcyclist who was in an accident with Chad last September while he was in the US. Praise God there has been progress.  The insurance agent called towards the end of last month and told us the motorcyclist is willing to settle.  Please continue to pray for complete healing for this man who was seriously injured.

Don't wait until the rice jar becomes empty to start sowing.

This phrase encourages people to be proactive, think ahead and plan for the future.
From the Bookshelf

Chad loves reading and always has a few books in progress.  Here are some great quotes from his recent reading

  • "God's vision for his people is not for the elimination of ethnicity to form a colorblind uniformity of sanctified blandness. Instead God sees the creation of a community of different cultures united by faith in his Son as a manifestation of the expansive nature of his grace. This expansiveness is unfulfilled unless the differences are seen and celebrated"  ― Esau McCaulley, Reading While Black: African American Biblical Interpretation as an Exercise in Hope. 2020.
