The Mountain is Falling!!! "We have some issues at the airstrip that need some attention...every time we blast we assume that the whole mountain is coming down." Shortly before Christmas, Chad received this text message from a colleague who is working at a construction site in Myanmar. At this mountain town, that is cut off from the rest of the country for months on end during the rainy season, EMI has worked with the Myanmar government, other missions organizations and the local community to design and construct a much needed airstrip. Currently, the people in this area need to travel 3 days to reach a hospital and 2 days to reach an airport (when the roads are passable). Once the airstrip is complete, this journey can be made in just under an hour, by plane! Unfortunately, to make a flat landing strip in this mountainous region requires literally moving mountains, which is what caused the initial text. Unstable material had been encountered as the crews were blasting and digging upwards of 100' deep into the mountain. Through the EMI Network of design professionals, Chad was able to solicit input and design recommendations from 4 different experts in blasting, slope failures and soil stability. Within a few weeks these experts had analyzed the problem and prepared a recommendation to get the project moving forward again. We are so grateful to be a part of an amazing organization such as EMI. If you know of any engineers, architects, surveyors, construction manager or geotechnical engineers who are looking to use their skills for international development projects such as this, please refer them to us or directly to EMI (www.emiworld.org). Accident Update A while back we asked you to pray with us regarding an accident that Chad was involved in while in the USA. We recently heard that the injured person is still recovering and the medical bills are mounting. There is talk of an upcoming lawsuit, but we are praying that it will not come to that! Please continue to pray for complete healing for the injured person and a resolution without a lawsuit. |
