Thanksgiving in July

  1. It was so much fun to meet with friends like the Crowleys to reconnect.
  2. We had a real traditional Thanksgiving dinner in July with Chad's mom because we could.
  3. Staff retreat included a riverboat cruise at sunset.  This is almost the whole group (minus Shanthi who was working).
  4. Chad talking with some people who have a church that floods every rainy season.
  5. The results from the survey are in!  There was no one person who got them all correct. :(  But those $5 Starbucks gift cards are going out for a few people who got distinctions. Some of the interesting facts include:
  • Korean noodles are found in both Cambodia and California.
  • We only experience static electricity in CA.  We don't use a dryer in Cambodia.
  • Cambodia does have signs in English, Khmer, Korean, and Chinese.
  • We've looked around and can only find donuts with creme in CA.  In Cambodia, they use custard frequently, but Chad's still looking for creme.  If you're wondering why donut shops in the US are run by Cambodians, here's an interesting article
  • We have Carl's Jr., as well as ColdStone, Burger King, Dairy Queen, and Domino's Pizza here in Cambodia.
  • There are rice fields, strawberries, sunflowers and rest stops along the highway in both Cambodia and CA.
  • There is a helmet law here in Cambodia and the police occasionally enforce it by stopping motorcyclists who aren't wearing their helmet and confiscating their motorcycle!

Thankful

To the Church

There is nothing as wonderful as the Church of Jesus.  It cares for you no matter where you live.  She wraps her arms around you with a warm hug.  He goes on long bike rides or just hangs out with you at a coffee shop.  She invites your kids into her home and cares for them as her own.  He encourages you through those tough seasons of parenting and life.  So THANK YOU CHURCH for all the love you've shown us and others around you!

To be "home"

Although we were thankful to be in the US for 2 months and spend quality time with family and friends, we are just as thankful to be back in Cambodia where things are familiar and with our church family and friends here.

For a little direction

Shanthi has taken a temporary position with Logos International School to teach Middle School science and physics.  We're not sure how long this position will last, but it's keeping her busy.  She leaves on Tuesday to head back to the US for 2 weeks to take Nathan and Chesna to university.

With the EMI/Petram office up and running, Chad's got a project trip coming up the first week in September to design a water intake and treatment system about 2 hours from Phnom Penh.  The ministry will develop 500 acres to become a Christian retreat center with camping, conference facilities, a prayer mountain and beautiful gardens.  We have also expanded our office with a temporary staff member from our India office as well as two interns (one from Korea and the other from the USA).  This means that our office has people from 5 different passport countries!

For office staff

While we were back in the USA, the remainder of our office staff we busy working away.  New projects were obtained, office renovations were completed and new people were hired.  Before we returned they had our house cleaned, purchased groceries and got all our bills paid.  We are so thankful that we have an incredible group of people to serve alongside!

PRAISES:
  1. Shanthi is substitute teaching for the science teacher at the kids' school.
  2. The staff retreat went very well.  It was great to hear the Cambodians offer their insights and wisdom to make our office better.
PRAYER REQUESTS:
  1. We've had a bunch of projects fall through.  Please pray for the right projects to come along that will keep all our staff employed.  We've already let one person go because there wasn't enough work.  We hate to do that.
  2. Pray for Chad's team that is coming.  They will be surveying in jungle areas, making lots of various recommendations and trying to solve some important questions for the ministry.  The team will be 7 people from all over the world.  Pray for wisdom, unity and laughter!
  3. Pray for our family while Shanthi is back in the US.  During this time we will be scattered as Chad's project trip will occur during this time.  Miriam and Moses will be home with another team member.

Better to have people enter

than to have them leave

Happiness is found in company.  It is nice when people stay; if they leave too quickly, you wonder whether you did something wrong or they do not respect you.

Miriam's Massages (or was that messages?)

You know that kids say the darnedest things.  Here you will get a few funny quotes from our kids.
  • Chad came up with a new marketing slogan: "Porta-potties.  They're everywhere you want to pee."

  • Miriam, "I've figured it out."  Shanthi, "What did you figure out?"  Miriam, "I'm not sure anymore."

  • "I don't want to watch someone pimp popples."  Miriam after starting to watch Dr. Pimple Popper while in the US.  America is a funny, funny country.

  • Miriam, "Can I take my new phone home and set it up myself?  I like setting it up by myself, with your help [Dad] because I don't know what I'm doing."

Moses' Corner Kick
Thanksgiving is right around the Corner. When I think about Thanksgiving In think about all the people in my life that I am thankful for. I am thankful for the summer and the peoplei got to spend it with. I am thankful that we made back to Cambodia safe. I'm even thankful that school started(Haha Sike!! That would make me crazy). The person that I am most thankful for this year is my Best friend Nathan. We had some wild experiences this summer. It's crazy all the new things that you learn from each other from being gone so long. Without him my summer would have been really bland and boring.
