What we learned in Cambodia

Pix

It was hard to choose only 6 photos this time.
1.  Heading out of Delhi, you never know what might happen when you walk out your front door, Bilbo Baggins.
2.  Chad at the Mekong River waterfront.  It's hot and humid in Phnom Penh.
3.  A view of the Cambodian flag through Independence Monument in downtown Phnom Penh.
4.  We got to watch some very beautiful aspara dancing. It is slow and methodical with lots of limber hand motions.
5.  We spent Easter having our own sunrise service at Ankor Wat.
6.  A fun pic of us walking down a path into the unknown, excited for what lays ahead.

What we learned in Cambodia

The Purpose

of this trip was for the CEO of eMi and Chad to choose the city for eMi to locate in. Another purpose was for our family to explore this new country we'll be moving to in just 9 months!  Our prayer was that the kids would look forward to returning to Cambodia in January.

The findings are in!
The city has been chosen unanimously!  A year ago, there was mixed reviews about which city eMi should locate in: the capital Phnom Penh near the universities and other NGO headquarters OR the more livable smaller touristy town of Siem Reap. On this trip, All 25 people we meet with spoke in one voice that Phnom Penh would be the best place to locate our office. The access to local design professionals, the many universities and the abundance of opportunities in Phnom Penh were all reasons that people mentioned for us to be in the capital city.

Moses made a friend.

I don't know if India has be difficult for Moses in order to make Cambodia seem better or what, but within 24 hours, Moses had made a friend.  He even had an afternoon at his friend's house to play.  He was hoping that instead of returning to India we would stay in Cambodia.

And a Thai architect...
As we flew back through Thailand, we had a chance to meet with a Thai architect who is interested in eMi.  He is awesome!  He had very creative ideas about sustainability and ruban (rural and urban) community development.  We are hoping that he might join us as we launch the Cambodia office in 2017.
  1. Chad has an upcoming trip to Nepal next month. Pray for all the logistics to come together and for the team to serve well.
  2. We are back in Delhi with temperatures already in the 100's!  A/C's are definitely on!  Please pray for all the people who work outside in the heat.
  3. Shanthi is going to start Hindi lessons with a neighborhood lady whose husband is the shop keeper where we buy eggs.  Please pray for a good relationship with her and ease of learning a new language.
  4. Continue to pray for wisdom as we move forward with the launching of the Cambodia eMi office.
  5. Please pray for Nathan as he pursues scholarships to cover the remaining $18,000 for Calvin College.

Miriam's Massages (or was that messages?)

You know that kids say the darnedest things.  Here you will get a few funny quotes from our kids.
  • "I don't really count 13 as being a teenager because I'm still practically 12." ~Miriam

  • As we were discussing the presidential nominees, Moses said he would vote for Tom Cruise.  We're not sure if it's because his name is similar to Ted Cruz or if it's because of his performance in Top Gun.

  • Eating in India can be dangerous as Nathan discovered while eating lunch this weekend.  As he was gulping water down he gasped, "I didn't know it was a pepper until it started burning!"

Moses' Corner Kick

I just got back from my vacation and it was amazing! We went to Malaysia first because we had a lay over there. We went into Kuala Lumpur and looked around. We found a geocache while we were in Malaysia. We went to a mall that had eight stories. After Malaysia we went to Phnom Penh for 7 days. We checked out some schools that we might attend. Our favorite school is called Logos. They had a swimming pool, a gym, and as soccer field. They we took a bus up to Siem Reap. We didn't like Siem Reap as much as Phnom Penh. Then we took a night bus back to Siem Reap. We hung out in the mountains for two days. We flew into Thailand on our way back to India and stayed there for two days. Thailand was an awesome place . They had so many cool things to do. When we were going somewhere we drove by a Lamborghini dealership. All in all our vacation was really cool.
