Here are some frequently asked questions.
Q: Why go to India first?
A: The eMi office in Cambodia is scheduled to be established in early 2017. We will initially go to India to refamiliarize ourselves with eMi and to experience first hand a successful model of integrating national professionals with Western designers.
Q: Why Cambodia?
A: There are approximately 500 registered engineers and 200 architects for the entire country with a population of over 15 million. In comparison there are over 80,000 registered engineers in CA alone. We plan to mentor nationals to help them launch their own businesses.
Q: How long will you be there?
A: We plan on being in India for about 9 months, returning to the US for a conference August 2016. Then we'll move to Cambodia. Our duration in Cambodia is undetermined, but will most likely be for 5+ years.
Q: What will you do about schooling?
A: Shanthi will start homeschooling the kids again. Nathan will wrap up his Senior year and Chesna will complete her last three years of high school in 2. Miriam and Moses will be in 8th and 6th grade respectively this Fall.
Q: Will you learn the language?
A: Since we only plan on being in India for a little under a year and we can get by with English, we won't learn Hindi. But because we want to mentor nationals in Cambodia, we will spend the first year there learning Khmer. In fact, Moses, Miriam, and Shanthi will start learning Khmer while home schooling in India.
Q: How do your children feel about moving overseas?
A: Initially there was fear of the unknown (still is sometimes) and leaving friends and family. After many discussions and investigations into the neighborhoods and countries all the children are looking forward to the move. There were also promises of phones so they can stay connected with their friends.
Q: How long will Chad continue to work?
A: Chad's last day will be Oct. 2nd. This allows us to use his well paying job to keep our insurance while here in the US and to save money for our trip. All your support money will go into our eMi account and will be used once we officially go on staff with eMi. In order to be on staff officially, we need 3 months of our budget ($16,500) and all our start up costs ($20,000) in our account and to have commitments for our entire monthly budget ($5500).
Q: How else can we partner with you?
A: We need a full team of people to join us in many ways other than financial. It would be great to have the following needs met:

A: We need a full team of people to join us in many ways other than financial. It would be great to have the following needs met:
- Someone to receive and forward our mail
- Prayer partners - click on the pray link on the right hand side
- Purchase and send occasional care packages
- Help transition our children back into college (Nathan is looking into Grand Rapids, MI area and Salem, OR while Chesna is still thinking about it but looking at NNU near Boise, ID)
- Partner with eMi Cambodia to enlist nationals to help with basic engineering design services. Part of our program will be to train nationals on doing Western design. Having Western companies willing to pay Cambodian nationals for design services will create a sustainable program for them. If you are interested, please e-mail Chad directly.
