1.  Ever wonder how many passports it takes to get the Gambles across the ocean.  Well, this trip it took 7.  $5 Starbucks gift card to the first person who can tell me why we needed all of them.
2.  Canoeing on a lake in Alaska.
3. Glacier in Alaska.
4. View of Lake Tahoe.  There was still lots of snow, even in June.
5. Kayaking on Lake Tahoe.
6. Nathan photo-bombing a picture of Miriam at Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs.

Our summer of adventures...

Ending our time in Cambodia

It all started when Chad handed off his director duties temporarily so that we could return to the USA for the summer.  Shanthi then finished teaching 10th grade science at Asian Hope International School and we both wrapped up our professional duties.  On our last day in Cambodia Miriam received a Student of the Year award and Moses was awarded the most improved player on his basketball team.  Within hours of these awards we were on a plane headed to the USA!

Beginning in America

One large reason that we return to the US regularly is to connect with extended family.  So within days of our return we attended a family BBQ and reunion in Lake Tahoe.  Shanthi enjoyed quality time with her sister and family by spending a week with them trying to bless and encourage them.  Another reason for returning is to experience the cooler weather and get some R&R, so Chad and Shanthi flew up to Anchorage to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary!  We went to Denali NP and on a day cruise out of Seward to see whales and glaciers (we weren't disappointed, it was amazing!)  Living overseas, with kids in university forces us to parent through life lessons in a quick amount of time.  With Chesna, this meant helping her buy a car and coach her through her first job!!

The adventure continues...

To continue "speed parenting" we took the train from CA to CO to see Nathan for a long weekend.  It was wonderful to see him in his first professional job as an intern with an IT ministry and to talk with him about the future and his upcoming college graduation.  Since his job was in Colorado Springs Chad was also able to go by the EMI office to connect with many people in person and share about what God is doing in the Cambodia office.  The rest of the month was full of coffee, dinner, and dessert dates with friends and supporters. God even provided in amazing ways for Moses to go to summer camp in Southern California!  On the 25th of July we will be returning to Cambodia and reunited with the office staff and beginning new assignments.

Looking ahead...

We will hit the ground running once we return to Cambodia with Shanthi starting teaching within days of our return.  She will be teaching Algebra 1 & 2, Geometry, and personal finance, while Moses enters 10th grade and Miriam begins her last year of high school!  We also get the opportunity to host  a young man from Logos who will be staying with us for the school year.  His parents live 6 hours away from Phnom Penh, so having him live with us gives him the opportunity to attend Logos (the school Shanthi and the kids go to). Chad will return to the office just in time to participate in a staff training week, intern orientation and then depart for Myanmar for a project trip to design a school and orphanage.

  1. Please continue to pray for Chad and his sciatic nerve and back pain.  We need wisdom to know when, where to get a steroid injection or go straight to back surgery.  Also pray as we navigate the insurance obstacle course.
  2. Pray for Shanthi as she starts to work full time for the first time in 10 years.  Pray for energy, strength, wisdom, Holy Spirit insight into her students, opportunities to disciple teenagers.
Miriam's Massages (or was that messages?)

You know that kids say the darnedest things.  Here you will get a few funny quotes from our kids.
  • Moses said, "I got a kid in the eye with a tennis ball and he threw up."  Not sure what kind of gag reflex that is.

  • One day, Miriam says to Shanthi, "You're beautiful." Now if she had stopped right there, it would have been a touching moment and probably wouldn't have ended up in this part of the newsletter.  But of course, she didn't stop there.  She continued, "So you're just like an egg." What??

  • And to round out this month's quotes, we give you one from Chesna, "I'm learning Spanish so I can work at Taco Bell, mija." And that's just what she did.  Work at Taco Bell.  I'm not sure how much Spanish she picked up there.

Moses' Corner Kick

It's that time of the summer where I need to pack up my belongings and head back to Cambodia. This summer was such a blast. I got to live with my best friend and we did so much together. Even though he was very busy with all of his own agenda I still enjoyed every moment we had together. I was able to make a bunch of new friends and connect with old ones too. I am really grateful for my parents though. They were the ones that made this summer possible for me. They did so much for me this summer and they don't even know. Thank you Mom, Dad, and the Kents for this summer.
