Happy New Year! - Again!

Gambles Newsletter                                    02/11/18                               Volume 4, Issue 2
serving Cambodia through engineering design and discipleship
Has Kampong Cham's iconic bamboo bridge reached the end of the road?
This is a video about the bamboo bridge last year.  This year, it's just a footbridge - no cars or motos anymore.

  1. Our first staff meeting in the new office!
  2. Chad at a local construction site.
  3. For his birthday, Chad wanted to go on a motorcycle drive to Kompong Cham.  That's what those cement letters say in Khmer.
  4. Kompong Cham is known for its bamboo bridge that gets built every year to connect an island to the mainland.  Once the rains start, the bridge gets washed away.
  5. For the first time in forever... (are you singing the song?) my Christmas poinsettias are growing after Christmas!  I guess that's what happens when you grow a tropical plant in the tropics.

Beginning Again

Office Launch

We got keys!! And we had our first staff meeting in the office.  There's no furniture, yet.  But we spent about an hour or so in worship (including a song in Khmer) and prayer.  It was truly humbling to see how far Jesus has brought us in just over a year!
The same day, there was a very large group of Cambodian engineering students doing some surveying in the street in front of the office.  It's God's sign to us that we chose the right place.

Lent

With Lent starting in less than a week, we're looking forward to fasting, praying, and giving as we anticipate the passion of Christ.  Shanthi is putting together a Lent study and if you're interested in joining us, hit reply and she will share the google doc with you.

Summer in the USA!

We bought our tickets back to California.  We plan to be in the Sacramento area from June 5th to Aug 4th. We hope to see many of you then! See below for prayer requests.
  1. Please continue to join Shanthi in praying for discerning what God wants her to do in Cambodia.  There is no shortage of ministry opportunities.  ***She's already volunteered in a slum and at an orphanage and looked at a teaching position at Logos.  She's currently teaching English to a couple Khmer kids.***
  2. We are looking to hire a Khmer staff accountant and architect in the next month or two.  Please pray that we find the right person for the job.  ***We may have found an accountant!***
  3. We're looking for housing for our family of 6 for July and a car to use for June and July.
  4. Please pray that our landlord would be willing to make an agreement with us to either sublet our house or give us 2 months free rent while we're gone, or reduce our monthly rent. If we can't come to some agreement, we'll need to move all our stuff into storage for the two months we're gone and find new housing when we return.

ខ្ញី កាន់តែ ចាស់ កាន់តែ ហឹល

sounds like "khn-eye gan-tie jah gan-tie hull"

The older the ginger, the hotter it gets

A reference to someone whose skills improve with age.  For example, a gifted singer or athlete.

Miriam's Massages (or was that messages?)

You know that kids say the darnedest things.  Here you will get a few funny quotes from our kids.

So... why take a black and white picture and then state that the dress is black?  Becuase you can!  Then the words in red show up much better.

Moses' Corner Kick

This month is starting off amazingly. Soccer is going great I have scored 11 goals in 8 games. My grades are all A's and I have made a cool friend. It turns out we are very alike, he is a missionary kid in 7th grade. He is two months younger than me but I'm a whole grade ahead of him. It's kind of crazy that it works like that. We play on the same soccer team right now. But we didn't play on the same basketball team because he was B team and I was A team. We get along most of the time, and it is nice to have someone to hang out with. I am about a foot taller than him so people don't believe me when I say I'm the same age as him.
