4.  If you look close, you can see that the license plate frame is from our home town of Roseville, CA!

You Said What?!

Language Learning

If you've ever learned a language, you know you just have to get out there and practice.  Chad's been practicing with anyone and everyone!  We hired a tuk tuk through an uber-like app and what showed up at our door wasn't the normal Cambodian tuk tuk, but the smaller, Indian auto tuk tuk. See picture at left. Shanthi went out to meet him and explained in her Khmer that our family is "thom" or large.  The driver said no problem and showed us how we can all fit.  A bit later in the ride, Chad was telling the tuk tuk driver that he has a large family, but rather than use the word "thom", he used the word "thoat".  It also means large, but it refers to one's weight being large, not the number of people.  The tuk tuk driver looked at him funny, but said "maybe?"  A short time later, Chad realized his mistake and worked with the driver to figure out the correct work to use in this situation.  Apparently "Miriam's Massages" are family wide now and not just the kids!

Where can we find...

There is so much to learn when you move to a new country, like where do you buy normal everyday items.  This makes shopping much more difficult and take 2-3 times longer.  One of our team members had gone to several ATMs just to try to get money out only to find out this past week that their bank had put a fraud alert on their account!

Take this matching game to test your living overseas skills.  Match the item with the place of purchase.
1) cable for bike lock

Answers can be found at the end of Moses' corner kick.
  1. Please, please please pray for our marriage.  A number of people have already told us that Cambodia takes a toll on marriages.  And once that disintegrates, missionaries leave the field.  We've already felt more attack on our marriage than normal.
  2. The girls are headed out on a "serventure" camp this week to two different places.  It's supposed to be like summer camp and mission trip rolled into one and a week off of school!
  3. Continue to pray that we would learn Khmer quickly.  We finish up our first module this week and then take the exam a week from Monday.  We both feel like we're ready to move on to module 2.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for all your generous giving this past 6 months!

We needed $8700 for school fees for the kids and $9050 came in! Thank you all so much for being part of God's provision for our kids to attend Logos International School this semester!

A few people alerted me to the fact that I misspelled my own e-mail address in the link to let me know if you mailed Chad a birthday card.  Apparently "Shanthi" is difficult to spell, even for me sometimes. ; )  We haven't yet received any of those cards (first one mailed 1/16) but we're still looking forward to them!

Miriam's Massages (or was that messages?)

You know that kids say the darnedest things.  Here you will get a few funny quotes from our kids.
  • "Haiku is Ukiah spelled backwards. Hey! That's one of the panagrams. No. That's not right.  It's a parallelogram!" ~Miriam (and she has a math teacher for a mom. go figure. Oh and btw, Ukiah is Shanthi's home town.)

  • "I have no problem with a dead chicken in my refrigerator." ~Chad

Moses' Corner Kick

So my coach says I've mastered what I call the "India flop." I picked this up while in India.  It means that I fall to the ground even if no one touches me.  I can be a bit dramatic.  I went to a friendly soccer tournament last week and I have a non-friendly one coming up this week.  I can't wait to see the difference. This is the last week of my soccer season.  That makes me sad.
